Frequently asked questions
Straight answers, including the limits.
How do I get Scout? Can I download it here?
Scout is an iPhone app for Sound Credit Union members taking part in the pilot. There's nothing to download from this website.
Which calls does Scout protect?
Calls that go through Scout: calls to your Scout number, calls to your regular number if you forward it to Scout, and calls you place with Scout's dialer. It can't protect WhatsApp, FaceTime, or other calling apps, and not every carrier supports forwarding.
Will callers know the call is protected?
Yes. Washington law requires consent from everyone on the call, so every caller hears a short notice before analysis starts. Real businesses and family are used to notices like this.
Does Scout hang up on scammers for me?
No. Scout warns you and offers choices: Reconnect safely, End call, or Continue call. You always decide.
Can Scout tell whether a voice is real?
No tool can promise that. Scout's voice check gives one of three results: possible synthetic speech, no synthetic indicators (identity still unverified), or unable to assess. It never says “verified human.” In the pilot the check is switched off until a detection service is chosen, so it shows “unable to assess”.
If Scout doesn't warn me, is the call safe?
Not necessarily. Scout can miss scams. If someone pressures you about money, codes, or secrecy, hang up and call your credit union on the number you know.
Does Scout record my calls?
Call audio is analyzed as it streams and isn't saved as a recording. Scout keeps a transcript, the caller's stated name and reason, and any warnings, for the time you choose (1 to 365 days; 30 by default). Voicemails callers leave are recorded.
Who can see my calls?
You. Your helpers and Sound Credit Union see only what you choose to share, and you can review it first.
Can Scout stop a payment or freeze my card?
No. After a risky call you can ask Sound Credit Union to put a temporary hold on outgoing transfers; their staff decide. For cards, Scout points you to your card issuer's real security line.
I already sent money or shared a code. What now?
Tap “I already paid or shared information” in the app for a step-by-step checklist. Contact Sound Credit Union quickly using the number on your card or its official website, not a number from the caller.
Does Scout work in Spanish?
Yes. The app, spoken warnings, transcription, scam analysis, the helper page, and this website all work in English and Spanish.
Do I need a helper?
No. Helpers are optional, and you can remove one anytime.
Does Scout work on Android?
Not in the pilot. Scout is iPhone only for now.
Does it need internet?
App calling does. If your iPhone can't receive app calls, Scout can ring your regular phone line and you use the keypad for options.
How do I know a call is really from Sound Credit Union?
If you turned on verified calls, a real call from Sound CU comes through Scout and starts with a private announcement: “Scout verified: this call is really from Sound Credit Union.” Even then, Sound CU never asks for your password, PIN or one-time code.
What does “Scout warned other members about this number” mean?
Scout gave a private warning to other members on calls from that number. It's a count only, with no names or recordings. It's a reason to be careful, not proof, and no message doesn't mean a number is safe.
How do I practice?
Open Practice in the app. Four short scripted scam calls show you exactly what a Scout warning looks and sounds like. No real call is made.
